SPORTING Single Direct Triumphs In N.Z. Free-for-All

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (0.C.).—-An improved pacer as the result of his two earlity; races at the meeting, Single. Direct won the New Zealand Free-for-AU in brilliant style for E. N. Kennerley at Addington yesterday. It was a most convincing performance on the part o°!’ the Auckland pacer, as he failed to settle down to his work at file start and lost 24 yards. Single Direct won by a neck from Captain Gaillard, with Knave of Diamonds, Integrity, and Globe Direct all close up. . . i\,r Q +^ n Morano returned to the winning list with a fine win in the Metropolitan Challenge Stakes. Always recognised as a smart young pacer, he had prejudiced his chances by failing to start promptly in his races, but yesterday he moved off well and finished stoutly to beat Burns Night.

There was a certain amount of interest lost in the Free-for-All when the favourite, Captain Sandy, broke at the start and by the time he could be persuaded to get on the journey he was giving the leaders 50 or 60 yards. Cameronian shot through to the front in the first furlong, with Integrity getting the ... trail behind him, Globe Direct right up in third place on the outer, and then following Attack, Captain Gaillard and, Loyal Nurse covering extra ground. Knave of Diamonds, Single Direct and Dundee Sandy were further back, but the first pair were making up leeway before the mile peg was reached. Cameronian still held his position until approaching the straight, with the field bunching behind him and Single Direct showing up with a terrific burst of speed to tackle Globe Direct and Captain Gaillard in the lead. These three settled down to a battle royal and then Integrity, who had been buried on the fence and had to change his course, and Knave of Diamonds joined in. . Single Direct gained a narrow decision from Captain Gaillard, Knave of Diamonds beating Integrity in a photo-finish for the minor placing, and Globe Direct close up.

Morano gave a smooth display to win the Metropolitan Challenge Stakes from the Derby winner, Burns Night. He was never far from’ the leaders, and, after getting a good run through on the inner in the straight, he headed Burns Night short of the post to win by a neck. The hot favourite, Young Charles, broke when the barrier was released and was soon 50 yards behind.

Casacando took up the job of pacemaker from Burns Night, Morano, Vedette, Gay Heritage and Bronze Gold, this being the order over the first half-mile. There was not much between Casacando and Burns Night into the straight, Vedette .challenging wide out and 'Morano on the inner, Bronze Gold also being close up. Burns Night looked the winner with 100 yards to go but Morano finished too well and had a neck advantage at the post. Vedette was an excellent third and Casacando a close fourth.
