SPORTING BEAUMARIS IN FORM AT RICCARTON TRIALS

[SPECIAL TO STAB]

CIIinSTCHURCII, This Day.—•Beauniaris showed that there is nothing wrong with his condition in a nine-furlong trial for New Zealand Cup horses and three-year-olds at. Riccarton yesterday morning when he was galloping very easily behind Valley Gold at the finish oAhe trial. There were 11 runners in this trial, and the series of trial gallops held during the morning provided horses with a useful outing under racing conditions. . During the New Zealand Cup trial Balkis fell when near the rear 'of the field”and her rider, W. McLean, apprenticed to trainer V. Lee, was removed to hospital suffering from broken ribs and internal injuries to which he succumbed early in the afternoon. The jockey s parents reside at Reefton. ,

Caronia set a last pace from the outset and led into the straight Beaumaris, Valley Gold, and Cast High. Beaumaris had the leader’s measure inside the distance, but, not ridden out, he was beaten on the line by Valley Gold, who got away better than usual and was; always prominent. Caronia held on 101 third, with Peridot next, in front of Maryburn, Johnny Peep, Radical, Cast High and Langham. Vitamin drew attention to her prospects as a Stewards Handicap candidate by going to the from early in the seven furlong event for open class horses, and outclassing her opponents, winning by a wide margin from Lord Elgin, who followed her into the run home. Robinfaye, slow away, was a close third, in front of Lovemorn, Trafalgar D y and Swayup. , „ . Vitamin has shown brilliancy in her track work since being trained at Riccarton and will be a prospect SGT the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday week, as she is a particularly smart beginner. Speedy Juveniles Twenty-three two-year-olds Paraded in two divisions lor a sprint over four furlongs. The Just division was won in an effortless manner by Pastel, who was in front from the early stages and drew right away in the run home to win easing up from Defender, a bay colt by defaulter from Arrowrose, trained a c Riccarton by F. Christmas for his Greymonth owner, Mr D. R. Dowell. Preface by Defaulter from Essay, trained by R. Wilson for J. S. Shaw, was third in front of Copperplate, by Gold Nib, racing in the same ownership as Pastel. The second division was won easily by Sharcssa, who, although slow" to find her feet after backing out of the stalls several times:, had tier opponents in trouble throughout the run home. She was followed home by Declare, a chestnut gelding by Defaulter from Straight Bat, trained by J- C. Toinkinson xoi

D. Gould, and Floral Flight, sister to Heather Flight, was a close third. Golden Air In Form A seven furlong trial for hacks was also decided in two divisions. Resolute, Fyxen, Winning Dancer, Maungareka, Acme, Highway and Golden Air were the most prominent on to the course proper, with Resolute in charge inside the final fur-, long, but Golden Air then challenged and beat Resolute narrowly, this pair being clear of Maungareka, who headed the strung-out remainder. The second division was responsible for an unfortunate mishap. Sally Gold fell when in one of the leading positions, and Cloudy Range fell over her, the latter returning, in a very lame condition, but Iris injury wast confined to a severe bruising caused by Coxswain galloping on him when on the ground. Valid led into the straight from* Te Kooti, Prefect and Hormond, but in the run home Te Kooti wore him down to beat him narrowly.
