Boilermakers Seek Amendment To Award

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.) Claiming that the recent amendment to the Metal Trades’ Award and Boilermakers’ Award had disturbed the equality of remuneration existing over a number of years for fitters and boilermakers, the New Zealand Boilermakers’ Union sought in the Arbitration Court today a return to conditions ruling before 1948, when pay for both sets of tradesmen were equal. The union was appealing against the decision of Deputy-Judge Dalglish on the application by the New Zealand Federated Boilermakers’, Iron and Steel, Ship, and Bridge Builders’ Union for an amendment to rates and wages payable under the Boilermakers’ Aw’ard by the increasing minimum rates for boilermakers from 3s lid to 4s hourly. Mr J. R. Hanlon appeared for the employers and Mr P. E. Warner for the Union. The Court reserved the decision.
