The worth of a State in the long run is the worth of the individuals composing it —J. No one has done more to let the British public know of the idiocy of nationalising steel than Mr . Alfred Edwards, the former Socialist M.P. for Middlesbrough East, who has now been adopted as Conservative candidate for his own constituency. He has talked to meetings throughout the country—including meetings of workers —with surprising success. —London Recorder. $«« « « A grinding machine capable of producing sections from teeth threethousandth of an inch in thickness has recently been installed in the laboratory of the Otago Dental School. This machine, described as a “triumph of precision engineering,” is the only one of its kind in the Dominion. It was made by Mr P. L. Lupp, of Dunedin, who has constructed a great variety of scientific and medical apparatus in use at the University of Otago, the Medical School, Dunedin Hospital, as well as jn many institutions throughout the country. Such extreme thinness is required in order that the tissue of the teeth may be studied under the microscope—anything under three-thous-andth of an inch would now allow the light to pass through. Before the machine was in use the grinding of a piece of tooth to the required tenuity was a task beset with many difficulties, and also much uncertainty, but the machine has eliminated all the guesswork from an extremely delicate operation. —The Seeker
