MINISTER’S REPLY DOES NOT CONVINCE COUNCIL OF WOMEN

At the monthly meeting of the Greymoiith branch of' the National Council of Women there was considerable discussion on a letter received from the Minister of Social Security in reply to a question as to why a married couple who are age beneficiaries are allowed to earn only £ 1 per week between them whereas two single people living together can earn £ 1 per week each without having the benefit reduced. The Minister stated that a married couple could live more cheaply than two single persons. Doubt was expressed as to the correctness of this statement which left members unconvinced of the fairness of the present arrangement. The following remits were passed: (a) That the Government be urged to ensure that 100 per cent wholemeal flour be made continually available to all; and (b) that in all political and local body elections and in Dominion referenda, voting shall be uniform preferably the “ruling-out” method. It was thought that this would greatly help aged people or those handicapped by short-sight or illiteracy. Mrs Stewart presided at the meeting and Mrs Kelly, the new delegate from the Convent Old Girls’ Association, was welcomed. The meeting concluded with the reading of two papers, the first on “The Declaration of Human Rights” and the second on “The Education of the Cerebral Palsy Child.” Townswomen’s Guild

Arrangements were made for members of the guild to assist in the sale of stamps during the first week of the Health Stamp Campaign in. October at the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Townswomen’s Guild held in Harker’s lounge on Tuesday- last. Mrs M. J. Fogarty presided over a good attendance of members.

Final arrangements were also made for the shop day to be conducted by the guild in aid of the St John’s Ambulance building fund. Remits from the National Council were read and discussed.

The opportunity was taken to present Mrs L. H. Bohmann with a bouquet of flowers prior to her departure on a three months holiday visit to Tasmania. Mrs Bohmann briefly replied. The home craft circle had on display some excellent examples of their handwork. Garden circle competition winners were: Low bowl of spring flowers: Mrs P. Joyce 1, Mrs H. Arthur 2; best bloom, Mrs F. F. Boustridge 1. Duets sung by Mrs Watson and her daughter and a pianoforte solo by Miss Broad were very much appreciated. Mrs Fogarty thanked the artists and presented them with a posy of spring flowers. The meeting concluded with afternoon tea.
