BRITISH SPITFIRE FIGHTERS IN SIAM
SINGAPORE, Sept. 23.—Siam has arranged to buy from Britain a force of Spitfire fighters and large quantities of light infantry weapons as part of her extensive preparations to meet Communist threats from inside and outside her frontiers. This was disclosed today by the Siamese Prime Minister (Marshal Phibul Songgram). Marshal Songgram said that Siamese and British military experts were now working out the details of the defence scheme. In the event of open war with the Communists in South-east Asia, Siam undoubtedly would side with the United Kingdom and the United States. New legislation aimed at preventing Communist activities in Siam was now being considered by his Cabinet, Marshal Songgram added.
