Industrial Accidents A campaign as a counter to factory accidents is to be launched soon by the Auckland branch of the Institute of Industrial Management. The rate of reported factory accidents rose last year [o 45.7 a thousand workers. A slogan will be printed on pay envelopes, brochures issued, and posters hung in factories.—(P.A.).

Railway Electrification No contracts have yet been signed in Britain concerning the electrification of the North Island Main Trunk railway and the Auckland suburban railway system, said Mr C. A. Mackersey, who arrived in Auckland by aii’ yesterday. Mr Mackersey was a member of the Railway Department technical mission which visited Britain in preparation for the electrification schemes. “We had a successful mission and the prospects for the scheme are bright,” said Mr Mackersey.—(P.A.)

National Party Candidates A conference of National Party candidates, including Members of Parliament, opened in Wellington today and will continue on Monday. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) is presiding. Matters for discussion include the election policy of the party, which will be dealt with by Mr Holland. Addresses on selected subjects will be given by several Opposition members, and campaign arrangements will be discussed. Candidates for all but two of the 80 seats have been announced.—(P.A.)

Aerial Topdressing The Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones, said yesterday that the first of two Miles Aerovan aircraft, ordered some time ago by the R.N.Z.A.F. in connection with experimental work in aerial topdressing, had arrived in Wellington. The other one was due to leave England shortly. The aircraft, which had arrived in New Zealand would be assembled shortly. The Miles Aerovan has two Cirrus Major engines of 155 h.p. each. It is designed as a light freighter, and is a high wing monoplane, built of composite wood and metal. It has a fixed tricycle undercarriage, with a steering nose wheel. The whole aft part of the: fuselage is hinged and opens outwards to provide unobstructed loading space. The cruising speed'is 112 m.p.h.-i-(P.A.) .
