FOREIGN ARMS AID BILL APPROVED BY SENATE

WASHINGTON, September 22.-—The United States Senate tonight approved President Truman’s 1,314,000,000-dollar programme of foreign military assistance. Earlier, the Senate rejected a move to cut by half the allocation of 1,000,000,Q00 dollars for arming the North Atlantic Pact nations.

Because the Hm'rse of Representatives had already reduced the aid allocation for European States to 580,000,000 dollars, the Senate’s approval of almost double that figure means that the Military Aid Bill will new be considered by a joint conference, of the Senate and the House, and an attempt will be made to reach a compromise betweep the two versions of the Bill. The Senate approved an amendment which specified that at least half, of the arms'shipments abroad would be carried in United States commercial ships. The Military Aid Bill, in addition to providing 1,000,000,000 dollars to

arm Western Europe, also provided 314,000,000 dollars for military aid to Greece, Turkey, Persia, Korea, the Philippines l , and “the general area” of China. There was no Senate move to cut these funds.
