MOTHER CRUSHED TO DEATH: INFANT SON ALSO DIES
SYDNEY, This Day (Rec 1 p.m.).— A 25-year-old woman, Mrs Una Shoesmith, was crushed to death when a log rolled down the bank of a creek near Wauchope, on the north coast of New South Wales, on. Thursday night. Her infant son died yesterday from exposure and her two-year-old crippled daughter is in hospital suffering from pneumonia caused by exposure. Searchers found Mrs Shoesmith yesterday with her daughter snuggled beside her and her six-months-old son lying with part of his face in six inches of water. Mrs Shoesmith was riding a horse with the two children. She dismounted to open a gate and stood on a log to mount again. Recent floods had washed away the earth under the log and it rolled down the bank. Mrs Shoesmith fell off and the log rolled over her. Her infant boy, who rolled into the shallow creek, died two hours after admission to the hospital.
