Ross Mails Although further consideration has been given to a request from the Ross Borough Council that the exchange of mails between Ross and certain offices in South Westland be restored, the Chief Postmaster at Greymouth, Mr H. R. Pool, has been advised by his head office that no change in the present system will be made. £63,000 Services Club Authority has been received by the Hamilton Combined Services Club from the Building Controller to erect a building costing £63,000 on its sections in Garden Place. The permit relates to one-third,or one wing, of the' original proposal, and provides for a three-storey building with a frontage of 160 ft to Caro street. Shops on the ground floor and offices on the upstairs floors are provided in the plan, which has been approved.

Boxing Team Leaves With the withdrawal of M. Tuck, due to a back injury, the West Coast will be represented by only two amateur boxers at the New Zealand championships, to be held in Wellington next week. They are C. Curtis (bantamweight) and B. Eder (lightweight), and they left by express this morning for Wellington, together with their trainer, Mr J. Finlay. The championships will begin on Monday and the finals will be held on Wednesday evening.

Heavy Rain Heavy rain which fell throughout the West Coast yesterday brought to an end a spell of dry, fine weather that had commenced to cause household water supply difficulties in rural areas. After more than three weeks in which rain fell on only four days yesterday’s rainfall total at Greymouth was doubling the month’s rainfall 1.17 in., to date and bringing it to 2.13 in. Further rain at Greymouth this morning led to the cancellation of all basketball fixtures, with the exception of a junior representative trial.

Purchase Of The Hualalai The United States Maritime Commission has consented to the sale of the t.s.s. Haulalai, the Superintending Engineer for the Anchor Shipping Line (Mr G. W. Cunningham) has completed preliminaries for the purchase of the vessel, and he will leave Honolulu today, said the managing director of the company (Mr R. Dyson) in Nelson yesterday. The crew is due to leave Auckland on October 4. Captain J. A. Hughan, at present master of. the Rata, will command the Hualalai. which will proceed from Honolulu to Wellington by way of Suva. The Hualalai, of 3089 tons, after refitting, will enter the NelsonWellington service.—(P.A.)

A novelty for West Coast dancers which, until the formation of the Westland Musicians’ Social Club was not possible will be the Musicians’ Ball to be held in Hokitika on Friday, October 21. All Westland’s dance bands will in turn play their _ top numbers, and with the organising ability of this bright club, this should prove to be the biggest ball of many years.—Advt.
