APPLICATION OF GROCERS’ AWARD

WELLINGTON,. Sept. 21 (P.A.).— A claim to apply the grocers’ assistants and drivers’ award to firms selling a list of “regular lines generally stocked in grocers’ shops” was advanced in the Court of Arbitration today. The claim was among those submitted by the New Zealand (except Northern Industrial District other than the Gisborne judicial district) Retail Grocers’ Assistants and Drivers’ Union. It was supported by the master grocers’ advocate, but opposed by chain grocery store interests.

Mr P. M. Velvin, advocate for the union, said inroads being made in the business of the legitimate grocer by after-hour trading had been a matter of concern for some time. The union had been advised by officers of the department that in its present undefined state the award was not very helpful. “To legislate in this manner could only be claimed to be ridiculous,” said Mr W. J. Mount joy, for the Wellington. Chain Grocery Stores Union of Employers and Self-Help Co-op., Ltd. It would mean that such businesses as chemists, dairies, fruiterers, and restaurants would be brought under the grocers’ award. Decision was reserved.
