Ironsand Experiments
The experimental smelting of ironsand has begun at Onekaka. A preliminary tapping of the electric open hearth furnace was made on Tuesday evening, and molten metal and slag was run off. The furnace was again tapped by a special electric device at 6 o’clock yesterday morning, when iron was led off to moulds and cast into bars of pig iron. It is not expected that full results of the test so far made will be known till smelting has been under way for about a week. —(P.A.)
Wellington Air Base A tentative agreement had been reached between the Wellington Harbour Board and the Commissioner of Works (Mr E. R. McKillop) on the provision of an alternative seaplane base at Evans Bay and on the reclamation of land for the development of Rongotai aerodrome, it was reported by the chairman of the board (Mr W. H. Price) at a meeting last evening. “The matter will now be referred to the Government for confirmation and, when the final agreement is reached, a statement will be made by the Government,” said Mr Price.—(P.A.) National Party Candidates Mr Leonard George Bradley, who is field manager for the Colonial Mutual Assurance Company, and a former naval lieutenant-commander, was selected as the National Party candidate for Auckland Central at an electorate meeting last evening. There were three nominees. Auckland Central is held by Mr W. T. Anderton. The selection of Mr John Lees Faulkner, -transport contractor and company. director, as National Party candidate for the Grey Lynn seat was also Announced. The seat is at present held by the Postmaster-General (Mr F. Hackett). —(P.A.)
