TIMBER SUPPLY POSITION SAID TO BE DETERIORATING
WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.).— The Minister of State Forests, Mr C: F. Skinner, in reply to an urgent question from Mi' W. Sullivan (Opposition, Tauranga) said in the House of Representatives that he was surprised to hear of any acute timber shortage in any part of New Zealand, Except for Gisborne, Oamaru, and Ashburton, he had had no complaints about timber shortages for several years. rr . Mr Sullivan had drawn the Minister’s attention to a statement by the president of the Auckland Timber Merchants’ Association that there would have to be a reduction in the amount of building unless there was an increased output from timber mills, and had asked for the reinstatement of the overtime subsidy to stimulate production. Mr Skinner said the heavy subsidy the Government had been paying had been removed from exotic timber and from indigenous mills not working full-time, but still applied to other mills.
Mr Sullivan interjected: “The position is deteriorating very fast.”
