GOLD FRAUD CASE IN SOUTH AFRICA ‘SALTED’ BOREHOLE
PRETORIA, Sept. 20 (Rec 2 p.m.) —The South African Government announced today that it was satisfied that the gold content of the sample on which the Erfdeel No 5 borehole result on June 3 was based was “fraudulently increased or salted. The yield from the borehole which is on an Erfdeel farm near Odendaalsrust, Orange Free State, had been officially confirmed from these samples at a “fabulously rich” figure —more than twice as rich as any previous find in South Africa. The yield had.been given as 529 ounces of gold to the ton of ore in a reef just over five inches wide. Shares in the company holding the option and others affected by the find boomed on the Johannesburg market. , The Government announcement said every effort would be made to punish those guilty of “salting,’ irrespective of the standing of the persons involved.” __
