MORE J.P.’s WANTED IN COUNTRY
. WELLINGTON, Sept. 20 (P.A.)— A plea that more appointments of Justices of the Peace be made in rural areas, was-made by Mr J. K. McAlpine (Opposition, Selwyn), in the House of Representatives this evening, -when the estimates of*the Justice Department were being considered. Mr McAlpine said that three times as many Justices of the Peace had died in his constituency as had been appointed. Most of those appointed were of mature years and could not do much travelling. He had been careful to recommend only men approved by the local bodies concerned, yet he had managed to have only six appointments made, said Mr McAlpine. ‘Minister of Health (Miss M. B?"Howard):'You were lucky to get those.
■'>Mr W. A. Bodkin (Opposition, Central Otago) said he knew of persons having to travel 40 miles: to get. a document witnessed by a Justice of the Peace. --
■ The Minister 'of Justice (Mr H. G. R. Mason) saiid a new list of Justices was nearly ready for publication. He would be pleased to .consult with. Mr McAlpine or 'other members to ensure there were .no undue geographic gaps. . • ,
