LAWN TENNIS UNITED CLUB HAD A SUCCESSFUL YEAR, PRESIDENT REPORTS
The club had experienced a successful year both on the courts and in the social sphere, stated the president, Mr A. L. McKay, in his report to the annual. meeting of the United Lawn Tennis Club last night. The membership was satisfactory and the club held the Presidential Trophy. The “A” team was jointwinners with Hokitika of the W.C.L.T.A. competition. The social functions conducted by the club included a trip to the glaciers. % Commenting on the club’s financial position, Mr McKay said efforts had been made to improve the position. The assets were in good condition and had been increased by the erection of a rally board. However, the need for maintaining the courts in good condition would have to be provided for, he added. Mr McKay concluded by extending thanks to the committee and members for their assistance. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr A. L. McKay (reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs J. R Leitch, G. Harker, G. Kear, A. Warnes, J. Hannan (re-elected), and C. Neville; club captain, Mr R. Hamilton (re-elected); vice-captain, Mr E. Bunt; secretary, Mr R. Kear (reelected); treasurer, Mr S. Saunders (re-elected); auditor, Mr A. Hutchison (re-elected); committees (men’s) club captain, vice-captain, secretary, treasurer, Messrs R. Egan, A. MacArthur; (women’s) Mesdames Neville, Timms, Bunt, Potter, Misses R. Innis, D. Hamilton; delegates to W.C.L.T.A., Messrs Hamilton _ and Hutchison; club coach, Mr Hamilton. A fairly large number of new players were proposed for membership. , It was decided that the club should open its 1949-50 playing season on October 1. If wet on that date, the opening will be held on October 2. In order to prepare the courts for play a ’’working bee” will be held on Saturday. , r , The following were the club trophy winners for last season: — A grade, men, Mr Hamilton, women, Mrs E. Ryan; B grade, men, Mr S. Saunders; women, Mrs R. Hamilton; most improved player, IVU V. Hansen; Beck trophy, Mrs Ryan and Mr Hamilton.
