PUBLIC SERVANTS AND JURY SERVICE

Objection to permanent members of the Public Service being exempted from jury service has been raised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce in a letter to the Minister of Justice, Mr H. G. R. Mason. “We hold the view that this exemption is not warranted,” the letter stated, “and that public servants and the State should be required to bear the same responsibilities in this matter as other private citizens, and private employers.”

The letter added that the Public Service Commission had advised that recommendations for an appropriate amendment to the Juries Act to permit public servants to be called for jury service had already been made by the Law Revision Committee, but that no action had as yet been taken by the Government to introduce the necessary amending legislation in Parliament. It was pointed out that there were special instances where exemption would have to be granted.
