WOMAN GIVEN PROBATION FOR FALSE PRETENCES

Five charges of false pretences involving business firms at Ashburton and Timaru were laid against Dorothy Gladys Goslin, aged 25, married, of Buller (formerly Inangahua Camp) in the Police Court at Reefton last week, before Mr H. Thompson, S.M. The charges were admitted by the accused, who was represented by Mr J. K. Patterson. Detective-Sergeant N. Thompson said that, prior to coming to Buller the accused lived at Ealing and obtained the goods concerned from the various firms under the name of Mrs Carter, of Timaru, and Mrs B. Harvey, of Milford. The names were fictitious but the accused had caused a considerable amount of inquiry. When interviewed by the Ashburton and Timaru police she claimed that there were women of the names given and that she had their authority to obtain the goods. The accused, added, the detectivesergeant, was again interviewed by him and Sergeant Bradley at Buller on August 30, when she admitted that her previous statements were untrue. The Magistrate said it appeared that the accused had embarked on systematic frauds and if it had not been for counsel’s remarks he would ihave considered a term of imprisonment. The accused was placed on probation for two years and was ordered to make restitution of £45 8s lOd, the value of the goods obtained, as directed by the probation officer.
