REDS INCREASE THREAT TO IMPORTANT AMOY
CANTON, Sept 1 (Rec. 10 a.m.).— The threat to Amoy, the important South Fukien seaport, increased tonight as the Communist General Chen Yi’s 29th army pushed further down the coast from Foo Chow.
Chinese quarters believe the Communists will attempt to occupy Amoy and -stabilise the position along the coast opposite the nationalist island stronghold of Taiwan before launching the main offensive in Northern Kwantung. The Nationalists, who withdrew from Foo Chow a fortnight ago, are now based in the East Kwantung port of Swatow to strengthen the defences there.
In Kwantung Communist guerrillas were reported to be driving along the river from Lungchuan to Wuhua in the direction of Canton. In. north-east China, the Reds have pushed nearer Sining, the capital of the Tsinghai province.
