INDOOR BASKETBALL UPSETS OCCUR IN KEEN CONTESTS

Strongly contested games were a feature of last evening’s matches in the Greymouth Indoor Basketball Association’s competitions. There were several surprise results. In the men’s competition Taxes defeated the leaders, Bobcats, by 9 goals to 2. A play-off between these teams will be necessary if Taxes continue on their winning way and beat the three teams they have yet to play in the round. Bobcats have to win their final match in the round to hold top JOIcICC. Another upset occurred when Rovers had their first win for some time, defeating a strong Railway team by 11 goals to 9. Marist had a convincing win over the one-time leaders Ratbags, who were weakened by injuries. Provided that Togs can complete the round without defeat in the women’s competition they seem assured of the lead. In a closely contested match which was tantamount to a final they defeated the previous leaders, Certs, by 15 goals to 13. Revingtons notched a victory over Comets by 15-14 to become equal with them in the competition. The following Greymouth teams have been selected to compete in an inter-association match with Hokitika to be played at Greymouth on Tuesday:—Comets, Revingtons, Togs, Bobcats, Railway, Ratbags. Detailed results of last evening’s matches were: —Togs 14 v Certs 13; Rovers 11 v Railway 9; Taxes 9 v Bobcats 2; Revingtons 15 v Comets 14; Marist 23 v Ratbags 9; Star 14 v Dodgers 8; Robcats 25 v ATC 11.
