AIR RACE TO N.Z. FOR £30,000 PRIZE

LONDON, September I.—-Reuter reports that officials of the Royal Aero Club of London are planning a 14,000-miles international air race from England to New Zealand for a prize of £30,000. The race is timed for the year 1953. This race, which will be the longest trans-world contest ever held, is likely to be organised on a speed handicap basis, so that both . jetpropelled planes and conventional piston-engined planes will be able to compete. If the development of supersonic speeds proceeds as at the present rate, it is anticipated that the fastest of the competing machines will cover the distance in under 30 hours. The present record is 59 hours 50 minutes. It is held by an R.A.F. navigational research Lancaster, the “Aries,” which visited all parts ox New Zealand some time ago.
