Flying Orders In Form For Sprint At Reef ton

Volomai and Peridot may fight out the finish of the Springs Handicap, which is the main attraction at the Beefton Jockey Club’s spring meeting tomorrow at Reef ton. The meeting is the first for the .1949-50 season on the West Coast circuit and,, with quite a strong contingent of visitors from Canterbury stables, good racing is assured. Piiccarton stables will no doubt , supply the favourite for the main sprint, the Antonio’s Handicap, and it is probable that Flying-Qrders, third to Lady Myrtle and Lexia in his last start, will carry the bulk of. investments. ’ ■■'

• Volomai, trained by A. S. Ellis, showed up prominently in the early stages of his race at Riccarton last month, and the Wild Chase gelding .will set his field a difficult task tomorrow. The Riccarton-trained gelding was in good form at the Westport spring meeting last year, when he won a double among the hack gallopers. His run at Riccarton should have brought him • into forward condition for tomorrow’s race. Peridot and Eulogise, both from J. S. Shaw’s stable at Riccarton, are entitled to. consideration, with the former . possibly the stronger candidate for tomorrow. Peridot is not troubled by distance and-he will probably, dispute favouritism with Volomai. Eulogise, a fine staying hack, may benefit from tomorrow’s race, as he has.not made many appearances in the past few months. Brilliant Beginner A brilliant beginner in Flying Orders will be hard to head off in the Antonio’s Handicap. On occasions he has shown himself to be up to the best sprint class. In his last start at Riccarton he held on solidly for third place. Newspaper is a smart performer over the shorter distances and he will not be easily beaten off tomorrow. His 'earlier

form warranted a trip to Trentham last season, but as yet he has not raced with success in open company. Luminous . Knight, Deficiency, and Lees ton all have credentials over this

cfi&tctncc* E. J.. Jennings has two promising novices in Lady Melville and Waihora engaged at tomorrow’s meeting. At her last appearance at Reefton Laidy Melville finished second to Bambalina. Bosun will carry a lot df support in his division of the Novice Stakes. Trained by C. B. Dawson, his two-year-old form, sug-

gested that he will hold his own in better company than he will meet tomorrow. Consistent Morning Watch Moaning Watch does not win out of turn. Tomorrow she has. dual engagements in the Blackwater Handicap and the County Handicap. For sheer consistency her record last season would be hard to equal-—24 starts for two wins and 17 placings. Orari trainer L. H. Pratt should collect a stake with the Nightmarch mare tomorrow. The trotting events Have filled particularly well. T. H. Gunning’s candidate, Highland Prince, who finished in a place at the Thames and Waikato meetings on his* northern campaign, will be the favourite if he takes his place in his field tomorrow. Paul Defiant raced prominently at Omoto in June, and Sea Pirate showed that he is well forward by leading his field home at the Buller Owners’ and Breeders’ Association matinee meeting last Saturday. Form horses are:— Blackwater Handicap.—Morning Watch, Finance. Rotokohu Trot—First Division: Sea Pirate,' Paul Defiant. Second Division: Highland Prince, President
