BASKETBALL Representative Side Played Well At Dominion Tourney
Displaying excellent field work and sound defence the West Coast representative basketball team, which competed at the Dunedin tournament last week, was unfortunate not to record a greater number of wins in the second ’ grade championship. Throughout the tournament the forwards did not attain their local standard of goal shooting and the weakness in this department was responsible for the loss of several matches. Many opportunities to goal were missed. Outstanding in the defence was Henderson who played consistently in all matches. M. Heslop and N. Burgess played well in the centre third and M. Malloy showed improved play in this 'department. N. Patterson showed the best form of the forwards. Seventh Equal Finishing seventh equal in the championship with Nelson, West Coast nevertheless returned with a good record. The team won five games, lost two by one goal, lost two by two goals, and lost two by five goals. They scored 114 goals and had 92 goals scored against them. The detailed match results, with the West Coast scores mentioned first were: v Wairea B 21-3; v South. Canterbury 5-3; v Southland Minor B 9-3; v Taranaki 10-11; y Waikato 8-9; v/Matamata 8-13; v Poverty Bay 12-6; v Horowhenua 12-6; v Tauranga 7-9; v Nelson 12-14; Hutt Vai-’ ley 10-15. . - Gained Distinction At the tournament two members of the team gained distinction. The West Coast Association design submitted by J. Blackie for the pocket monogram for the New Zealand blazer was accepted by the New Zealand conference delegates by a 75 per cent majority. Also M. Heslop was successful in passing the New Zealand referees’ practical examination. GAMES AT REEFTON The Geraldine representative basketball A and B teams who .are visiting the West Coast on tour played matches at .Reefton on Wednesday against local A and B teams. The visitors won both games scores being: A teams 14-12; B teams 14-10. The games were fast and interesting, and were watched by a good crowd at the school grounds. The visitors: were :entertained at a dance on Wednesday night.
