Tribunal To Re-open Miners’ Claim Hearing
SYDNEY, August 30— Over-ruling a submission by the president of the Miners’ Federation (Mr I. Williams) that the Coal Industry Tribunal finished with the hearing of the miners’ application for long service leave when the miners struck, the tribunal (Mr F. Gallagher) today decided to reopen the hearing. He said that he took this action because the miners had not resumed work promptly after his warning on long service leave. Previously, Mr Gallagher had said that he would announce a draft award on long service leave on June 14. He withheld the award when the miners decided to strike on June 27. Today, Mr Gallagher said he now proposed to hear evidence on the nation’s ability to finance long service leave for miners, while it suffered from losses as a result of the coal strike.
