POLIO EPIDEMIC IN STATE OF VICTORIA
MELBOURNE, This Day (Rec. 11 a.m.). —Poliomyelitis has reached the epidemic stage in Victoria. There have been 411 cases since the beginning of the year and 25 deaths.. The ages of the patients range from 12 months to 35 years. The number of adult cases has been unusually high. The Minister of Health, Mr Garside, warned that the peak of the epidemic might not be reached until the summer. It is the second worst poliomyelitis outbreak in Victorian history. The worst was in 1939 when there were 2060 cases, involving 113 deaths. The average yearly total since 1916 has been about 50. Last year’s total was 32.
Health officials said it has been established that milk does not carry the disease.
