CATHOLIC BISHOP APPOINTED TO DUNEDIN DIOCESE

DUNEDIN, August 22 (P.A.) —Dr John Patrick Kavanagh, D.C.L., has been appointed Apostolic Administrator and Coadjutor Bishop of Dunedin and titular Bishop of Algiza. Bishop Whyte has received notification from the Apostolic Delegate at Sydney, Archbishop Marella, that the Holy See has appointed Dr Kavanagh tO this pOSt. ’ . nn V Dr Kavanagh, who is 36 years of age, was born at Hawera and educated at the Hawera Convent and Sacred' Heart'College, Auckland. He studied at the Holy Cross College, Mo.sgiel, from 1932 to 1936 and was ordained by Archbishop O’Shea at St Mary of the Angels, Wellington, on September 6/ 1936. Later he went to Rome for a post-graduate course in the Institute of Law of the Pontifical Lateran University, where, as part of his course, he undertook special studies at the Sacred Roman Rota. On the completion of his studies he graduated as a doctor of canoh law. After his return to New Zealand in November, 1940, Dr Kavanagh was for four years curate of St Peter and St Paul’s parish, Lower Hutt. In August, 1944, he was transferred to Archbishop’s House, Wellington, and was appointed to the diocesan tribunal as Defenser Vinculi and as canonist to the Archbishop. In addition to his diocesan work. Dr Kavanagh has been in charge of the work for the Polish children in New Zealand and has represented the hierarchy in all matters concerning these children. As part of this work he was responsible for the setting up of hostels for boys and girls at Lyall Bay and Island Bay. Dr Kavanagh is the eldest son of Mrs Margaret Kavanagh and the late Mr Lawrence Kavanagh of Hawera. He is one of a family of 10, six boys and four girls. All the others live at Hawera. They are Messrs Patrick, Robert, Timothy, Desmond, and Brendan Kavanagh, Mrs Mahoney, and Misses Joan, Margaret and Mary Kavanagh.
