Haast Highway The difficulty of attracting men to work on the southern end of the Haast Pass road was becoming a real problem, said Mr W. F. Young (District Public Works Engineer) in Christchurch yesterday. Inquiries were made about employment, but few men fulfilled engagements. A limited number of employees were working slowly up about five miles from the Haast river on road construction, he said. The men had also to maintain construction already done. Numerous slips occurred and the maintenance work was becoming a major work. From Weheka to the Paringa river, the South Westland highway was in a condition which agreeably .surprised him, said Mr Young. Much work lay ahead on the protection of waterways. Bridge abutments and piers and river banks had to be attended to.
