13 KILLED IN EXPLOSION AT LEVEL CROSSING

CAPE' TOWN, August 21 (Rec. 1 p.m.).—Thirteen people were killed today when a lorry loaded with gelignite collided with a train at a level crossing near Ndola, in Northern Rhodesia. Two Europeans and 11 Africans were killed and 17 Africans were taken to hospital seriously injured. A few scraps of twisted iron were all that remained of the lorry when the gelignite exploded. The locomotive and three trucks of the train were blown to bits and a section of the track ripped out of the ground. Parts were found more than a mile away. The victims were the locomotive driver, three people on the train, the crossing keeper, seven men in the lorry and another man.
