WOMEN’S COUNCIL DISCUSSES FLOUR AND WOOLLENS

Reference was made by members of the Greymouth branch of the National Council of Women at its monthly meeting recently to remits asking for nonshrink and moth-proof woollens and flour containing 100 per cent wheat. bS lt\vas stated that there are on the market at least two New Zealand-made brands of non-shrink woollens and one imported brand of knitting wool. While New Zealand mills were known to be interested in the moth-proofing of garments, this had not yet been placed on a commercial basis. With regard to the flour the Home Science School at Dunedin had stated that ‘-whole meal flour” (when available) contains 100 per cent wheat berry. Mrs Brown was appointed liaison officer from this branch to the United Nations Association of New Zealand. The treasurer reported a credit balance of over £l6 from the shop day. It was decided that £5 of this amount be donated to headquarters where work is seriously hampered for lack of funds. The matter of safety in children’s cots again came up for discussion. For the information of mothers and others contemplating the nurchase of cots or play-pens, they have an adequate safeguard in the standard mark which may be carried only if the following specifications are fulfilled:- 2 -Spacing of slats and rungs should not exceed 21in in the clear; all edges <should be smoothly rounded; fittings and catches must be strong and securely attached, internal height must be not less' than 221-in.
