PRINCIPAL TO BE ASKED TO WITHDRAW REMARK

Consideration was given by the Canterbury Education Board at its monthly meeting in Christchurch yesterday to a press report on a discussion which took place at a meeting of the Greymouth Technical High School Board on July 25. After perusal of all the correspondence relating to the proposal for the board to take over the control of the Hokitika Manual Training Centre from the Technical High School Board, members asserted that the principal of the Technical High School, Mr W. M. Stewart, if correctly reported, was clearly wrong in his statement that the board’s letter gave a “falsified, account’ ’or was “inaccurate.” This is stated in a supplied report of the board’s meeting. It was decided that the full correspondence be made available to the press and to ask Mr Stewart to withdraw his remarks. Correspondence was received from the principal advising that at a recent meeting of the Technical High School Board, "it was decided that a conference of representatives of the two boards should be held to discuss the proposed change in control of the Hokitika Manual Training Centre. In this respect, Messrs D. S. Kennedy, F. L. Turley and W. M. Stewart had been appointed and it was suggested that the conference be held in Greymouth. It was decided to appoint Messrs C. E. James, J. F. McDougall and R. W. Sansom to represent the board at the conference, the date to be arranged by the representatives. An application from the Hokitika School Committee for the replacement of the desks in the secondary department by tables and chairs was referred to the West Coast foreman for a report. With reference to the Hokitika Committee’s request for the installation of fluorescent lighting throughout the school, it was decided to ask the senior inspector to submit a report on the lighting conditions in the building. .
