FRENCH MAY IMPOSE LIFE SENTENCES FOR INCENDIARISM

PARIS, August 19 (Rec. 10.20 a.m.). —The French police today arrested two men on a charge of incendiarism in the Gironde Department of south-west France. The Ministry of the Interior had just previously issued a’ warning that the penalty for setting fire to forests or crops might be life imprisonment with hard labour. Fires broke out this afternoon near Aix and fire-fighting reinforcements were rushed from Marseilles, ,18 miles away, and from Toulon. Others started on He Doleron, off the western coast of France, in a forest near Meaux, less than 25 miles from Paris.
