Rugby Player Without Hands
Probably for the first time in 20 years a Rugby football team of residents of Great Barrier Island has played against an outside fifteen. Their opponents were a team from the cruiser Bellona, and the game wasplayed when the ship called at Port Fitzroy in the course of exercises in the Hauraki Gulf recently. With a small population of young men most matches on the island have to be played with less than full teams, and the Bellona’s visit provided one of the first few opportunities for a full fifteen to be fielded. One of the island’s forwards was a Maori who lost both hands in a bush accident some years ago. His skill in handling the ball with his arms amazed the Navy players. The Bellona team won by 23 points to O.—(P.A.)
