APPALLING RECORD OF CRIMINAL: COURT COMMENT
DUNEDIN, This Day (P.A.)You must have the most apalling record oi any criminal in New Zealand," said Mr J D. Willis S.M. in the Magistrate s Court this morning when John Henry Silva, aged 32, a railway employee, of Dunback, appeared on four charges oi unlawful conversion of motor-vehicles and six of theft. Silva pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to an aggregate of two and a half years in prison with hard labour. “You have been before the court on at least three other occasions for unlawful conversion,” said Mr Willis, as well as on numerous charges of breaking, entering theft and general dishonesty. The only place for you is gaol and I am going to impose sentences that will keep you there for some time.” „ ~ Chief .Detective T. Y. Hall said Silva was on licence from Auckland prison. He had been sentenced to a total of 15 years’ hard labour in 1941 and had served almost eight years. A flogginghad been included .in his previous sentence. '
