REEFTON EXTRA LECTURER AT SCHOOL OF MINES

REEFTON, This Day (0.C.).— While the Department held that there was not sufficient work in the. area to keep two full-time lecturers fully engaged, the Minister of Mines, Mr A. McLagan, had promised that some help would be forthcoming for the director with classes at country centres, said Mr J. K. Patterson, reporting on an interview with the Minister, at the monthly meeting of the council of the Reefton School of Mines. An alternative plan would be submitted to the school council whereby part-time -lecturers would help at two of the country centres. The matter was deferred until advice was received from Wellington. Mr Patterson was thanked by the president (Mr J. B. Auld) for his efforts on behalf of the school. The directors’ monthly report showed that class attendances were:— Reefton 25, Waiuta 3, Blackball 13, Dobson-Wallsend 9. No analytical work was carried put during the month. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. A. McEwen, a former officer and pupil of the school, was carried. « Representations are to be made to the Mines Department for an amendment to the Coal Mines Act for the endorsement of gas testing certificates for mine officials by the directors of the Schools of Mines. Mr J. B. Auld presided at the meeting, and also present were Messrs R. Alborn, G. Richards, A. Saunders, D. Wight, J. Patterson, J. K. Patterson, C. Lawn, J. Etheridge, the director, Mr W. J. Bolitho, and W. Bonifacio (secretary). HOSPITAL IMPROVEMENTS In conformity with the plan to carry out improvements near the Reefton Hospital, and the Nurses’ Home, the Inangahua County Council has commenced the levelling and clearance of the roadway in Lower Shiel and Church streets. It is understood that, footpaths are to be built for the approaches to the new Nurses’ Home. The grounds of the home are also being levelled and a contractor has commenced the laying-out of the gardens and the planting of shrubs in the flower beds.

A bulldozer and-mechanical loader are at work on the levelling programme. _
