General News

Mine Resumes Idle for part of yesterday, the Strongman State coal mine was worked as usual today. A mishap on the main haulage rope led to the stoppage. Repairs were effected in time to allow the back shift to commence work last evening. A “Dry” Shareholder One “dry” shareholder who would be eliminated would be the Minister of Finance, said Mr E. R. Corbett (Opposition, Egmont), speaking in the House of Representatives yesterday on the bill providing that co-opera-tive dairy company shares are to be held only by suppliers. Companies that had to provide “dry” shareholders with a fixed tax-free dividend had had to meet heavy taxation demands to fulfil that obligation, Mr Corbett explained.—(P.A.).

Wharf Mishap A mishap involving the hydratilic equipment on the Greymouth wharf delayed loading operations on the Kaitangata this morning. This is the second hold-up within a week, work being suspended last Saturday afternoon when a hawser from a crane being shifted along the wharf fouled a hydrant and knocked it over. Work was delayed for an hour this morning, when the pipe to the single crane working the Kaitangata, burst.

Appreciation Voiced An unusual type of deputation waited on the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, while he was at Greymouth this morning. It wanted nothing other than an opportunity to express appreciation for the Prime Minister’s atf tention to the numerous requests made by the Westland District Progress League. The deputation comprised Messrs G. R. Harker (president), W. D. Taylor (past president), F. A. Kitchjngham (vice-president) and J. Saunders (secretary) of the Progress League, and they expressed thanks for Mr Fraser’s effort, particularly in connection with the provision of a new post office at Hokitika and new police station at Greymouth. National Savings

National Savings investments at the 10 offices in the Greymouth district last week totalled £5687, an excess of £4571 over the weekly quota of £lll6. The district and Kumara have now obtained their respective annual quotas. The position of the offices on a percentage basis is as follows: —Kumara, 242 per cent; Blackball, 137 per cent; Greymouth. 11l per cent; Reefton, 98 per cent; Brunnerton 95 pet cent; Ross, 83 per cent; Runanga, 81 per cent;. Otira, 78 per cent; Hokitika, 55 per cent; Waiuta, 50 per cent; and the district 100 per cent. •‘lt’s Orange Blossom Time” at the Regent Theatre all next week, when the Greymouth Operatic Society will present eight performances of “The Geisha'.” “No Joking”,—early booking is essential, —and it’s at Robert Francis Ltd., Mackay street.—Advt.

It-may not be the same story any night, but country people if they come to town on Wednesday or Saturday afternoons for t the matinees are assured of seats for the Greymouth Operatic Society’s presentation of “The Geisha,” right throughout next week, August 8 to August 13 (Mon. to Sat.) A feast of entertainment for six nights and two matinees.—Advt.

As a mark of appreciation of the past efforts of the Greymouth Operatic Society for worthy causes, several groups of citizens are arranging for theatre parties to attend the two opening night performances of “The Geisha” at the Regent Theatre. Why not do likewise and give the local artists that necessary fillip when the curtain rises for their latest presentation. It would be a very happy thought. —Advt
