RUGBY FOOTBALL Cobden Is Only Unbeaten Team In Championship
Cobden is now the only un-, beaten team in the West Coast t Rugby Union’s senior championship competition. It is’now four points clear of its .nearest rivals, Star (which has played one game fewer) and Blaketown. One of the two unbeaten teams in the competition, Star, met defeat in the fifth series in the first round, played at Rugby Park on Saturday, while United, which, with Star, was regarded as one of the teams most likely to end Cobden’s winning sequence, did not prove equal to the occasion, going down to the leaders by 19 points to 3. Cobden was always going better than United, but Blaketown, after having, the upper hand on Star for most of the game, almost lost control of the situation in the final quarter-hour, when Star came close to staging a last-minute recovery. The two senior matches played at Hokitika caused the biggest upset in the competition. Kiwi and Kokatahi defeated higher-rated teams in Excelsior and St Mary’s to register their first wins in the competition. There was a surprise and a nearI surprise in the junior matches. Celtic, the second-bottom team on the ladder, was impressive in giving Magpies—second on the ladder —a sound defeat, while the leader, Technical Old Boys won over Blaketown only by staging a strong finish. Technical was nine points down at one stage. | The weather was fine and the grounds in good order, and the matches at Rugby Park attracted the largest crowd for the year—probably the biggest club “gate” (excluding finals) for some years.
Matches played on Saturday in all grades resulted as follows:— Senior. —Blaketown 9, Star 6; Cobden 19, United 3; Kokatahi 17, St. Mary’s 6; Kiwi 13, Excelsior 9; Celtic a bye. Junior. —Celtic 14, Magpies 3; Cobden 18, Star 0; Technical Old Boys 14, Blaketown 9. Third Grade. —Celtic 14, Technical 8. Fourth Grade. —Hokitika 32, Cobden 3, Celtic won by default from Technical. Fifth Grade. —Star 18, Technical 6; Cobden defaulted to Hokitika. Sixth Grade. —Blaketown 19, Cobden 3; Technical defaulted to United; Hokitika 12, Star 0; Celtic a bye. Seventh Grade. —Celtic 14, Blaketown 0; Cobden 17, Star 0. Eighth Grade. —Blaketown 6, Cobden 6; Celtic 3, United 3.
