Chose To Stay In Japan

TOKIO, May 22 (Rec. 11 a.m.). —A New Zealand soldier who chose to stay behind and live with the Japanese when the New Zealand contingent was withdrawn from Japan last November had a fairly hard time, he told the Allied authorities when he gave himself up last ,week. He is Private W. O. Simpson, aged about 45, who was originally a Fijian. He migrated to New Zealand as a boy. Simpson lost a lot of weight. He was clad in rags when he surrendered to the United States provost. He went absent without leave on November 25 and thereafter lived with Japanese in the Yokohama area.

Simpson, who is believed to be the last member of the New Zealand contingent still in Japan, will probably be returned to New Zealand under escort.
