Westport Competitions
The Westport Competition .Society s seventh annual festival concluded on Thursday, when a capacity house attended the final session. Record at 7 tendances were maintained throughou the 12 sessions. Barefoot dance, 12 and oyer. Leola Goodall, 77; 1; Lee Ruth Quinn. 71 2 Cornet solo, slow melody (Robertson medal): James Roy Henry (Greymouth), 77, 1; Earl Sara, 74, 2. Sword dance, under 12: Valerie Harris, 68, 1; Joyce Charteris, 67, 2. Tap dance, 12’ and over, Leola Goodall, 78, 1; Marilyn Wright, 73, 2. Sight reading, open: Colleen Wells, 80, 1; John Joseph O’Donnell, 75, 2. Seann Triubhais, under 12: Valerie Harris, 69, 1; Bettye McNicholl, 67, 2. Sword dance, 12 and over: Thelma Harvey (Timaru), 78, 1; Leola Goodall, 67, 2. Major awards won during the festivalwere: — Gibbs Challenge Cup, for most promising vocalist: Lorraine Margaret Graham (Greymouth). Audrey Nott Challenge Cup, for highest aggregate in fancy dancing classes, under- 12: Shirley Veale (Greymouth).
