Farm Workers Strike
Reuter’s Rome correspondent says that a third of Italy’s agricultural production has beep stopped by a strikeof more than 700,000 farm workers. The strikers belong to the Communist-led General Confederation of Labour, which is seeking a national wage agreement for farm workers. The confederation has threatened that if farmers do not reconsider their decision to give workers only provincial contracts the strike will be extended throughout Italy. This would involve 2,000,0,00 workers. Non-Communist trade unions have boycotted the strike as a Communist political manoeuvre. —London, May 19.
