WESTERN BERLIN’S APPROVAL OF NEW CONSTITUTION
LONDON, May 20.—The West Berlin City Assembly today unanimously approved the new Constitution for the West German Federal Republic. Professor Ernst Reuter, the Western Lord Mayor, said that, although Western Berlin would not be part of the' Federal Republic, the assembly wanted to emphasise its adherence to the new German republic which was about to be born in Western Germany.
The State of Bavaria, in the United States zone, today rejected the pew Constitution for the Western Federal Republic by 101 votes to 64. Bavaria, which is traditionally independent, is the first State to reject the Constitution, and it will probably be the only one.
The voting came after a 14-hour session of the Bavarian Parliament, which afterwards decided, by 97 votes to six, to recognise the legal validity of the Constitution, provided it received the required approval of two-thirds of the 11 West German States.
