Compulsory Unionism

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. Compulsory unionism was not in the best interests of the trade union movement in this country, said the president of the Otago Trades Council, Mr W. B. Richards, to a meeting of students called by the Otago University Radical Club. He had advocated its introduction, but had since come to the conclusion it was a mistake, although in this view he was still in the minority within the movement.

Mr Richards was replying to a question raised by the student audience, why he opposed conscription when the unions had a form of it in compulsory unionism.
