PENALTY GOAL DECIDED RESULT AT NGAHERE

. Although Blackball possibly had a territorial advantage, there was nothing between the teams in the, match at Ngahere, in which not one try was scored. A penalty goal kicked by R. Nuttall in the second half gave Blackball the lead and ultimately victory by two points, Ngahere failing to open its scoring account. In the first half Blackball attempted to play open football in conditions which did not favour it, but in the second half there was a change of tactics and Blackball adopted the same type of tight, spoiling football which had been successfully exploited by Ngahere. As a result, play was not spectacular, but it was fast and always exciting. The Blackball team included a number of newcomers, of whom the most impressive was the former Runanga forward, F. Thompson. With R. O'Donnell and R. Aynsley, he led the Blackball pack. Two new Blackball wingers, Warr and Patterson (new arrivals in the district) had few chances. R. Nuttall was the outstanding back, with W. Pascoe and W. Mountford also doing well. R. Thomson made an auspicious return to the Ngahere team, but when injuries compelled a re-casting of the team, he had to be played in the backs. P. and J. Mulcare and W. McLennan also went well in the Ngahere pack which, however, was not as impressive as it was last week. In the Ngahere backs, which did not have many attacking opportunities, A. Bernard, P. Richards, and J. McLaughlin were the most effective.

The teams were as follows: — Blackball.—R. Nuttalk Warr, vV. Mountford, Patterson; A. O'Donnell, W. Pascoe; J. Oliver; L. Kerr, F. Thompson, R. O’Donnell, R. Aynsley, A. McLure, A. Clark. Ngahere.—B. McMahon: J. Kirwan, J. Gibson, P. Richards; A. Barnard, R. Thomson; J. McLaughlin; F. Mulcare, P. Mulcare, J. Mulcare, D. McVicar. M. McLaughlin, W. McLennan. Ngahere received a set-back in the first 10 minutes of the game when J. Gibson had to retire with an injury being replaced by F. Clyma. Tne ball soon became difficult, to handle, although the ground was in good order and after the first half hour ,it was primarily a forward game, with Nuttall scoring the. only points with a penalty goal, at his third attempt. Mr W. Hopkins was referee. SCHOOLS' FIELD DAY.
