Preview Of Atomic Age Warfare

Top-secret indoor naval exercises, giving a preview of “atom age” warfare, opened at the Greenwich Naval College, London, today before the most important peace-time gathering of British Commonwealth and American service chiefs ever assembled in Britain. *

The exercises, known as “Operation Trident,” and due to last for five days, are being held behind heavily guarded doors, surrounded by more security measures than prevailed on many war-time occasions.

Only the barest outline has been divulged publicly of what some 400 or more high-ranking officers, scientists, and “backroom boys” will hear and see in a series of lectures a’nd demonstrations dealing _ with the future defence of the British Commonwealth and its ability to wage war. All weapons, tactics, strategies, and ideas which could be applied in defence on the Commonwealth supply routes and future sea warfare will be reviewed. British naval officers from all overseas stations are joining military and air force representatives in a study of the exercises which will all be open to a delegation of high-rank-ing United. States officers and technical experts, who have come to London specially for the occasion. Apart from talks by specialists, the exercise is being conducted by means of films and stage settings,, as well as by models representing»sea battles. Other parts of the exercises are considered so secret that every person entering the demonstration hall must show a pass and be checked by 'security officers.
