SPORTING Excellency—Citril Are Riccarton Stars

(SPECIAL TO STAR]

CHRISTCHURCH,.This Day.

The marcs, Citril and Excellency, rivals earlier, proved to be the stars of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting, which concluded at Riccarton on Saturday. Both added another race win to their impressive lists. Citril, who is now to retire, brought her winnings up to £10,345 when she proved too strong for her two-year-old opponents in the Challenge Stakes. The change of role from sprinter to stayer did not affect Excellency’s winning sequence, and she scored handsomely after coming from a long way back in the mile-and-a-half Sockburn Handicap. Her stake earnings are now £11,530. x

The totalisatoi' turnover for the three, days was £325,395 10s, com-pared-with £284,199 10s last year, an increase of £41,196. The turnover on Saturday was £110,531, as against £102,093 on the corresponding day last year. Citril finished her racing career with an impressive win in the Challenge Stakes. Western Winner was first to break the line, .Golden Spa and Citril following. Citril took second ptece after two furlongs and * she was only half a length behind the leader at the home turn. Western Winner was beaten soon after the straight was reached, while at the distance Golden Spa ranged alongside Citril. For a few strides it looked as if an exciting finish was in sight, but Citril soon drew away to win decisively. Western Winner, Beaumaris, and -Trinidad followed at intervals. Citril came home brilliantly, running her last half-mile in 47 3-5. She will now be retired to the stud. Of her £10,345 stake winnings, £7230 was won this season, so the Riccarton trainer F. A. Roberts has done exceptionally well with her while racing her in his ’own colours.

Excellency’s Ability There was a fine finish to the Sockburn Handicap. Royal Tan, Excellency, Libestraum, Frances, and Speedy were smartest out, but after two furlongs, Tuatea rushed up to join Frances in front, with Arctotis', Speedy, Thornbridge, and Shere Khan next. Arctotis and Frances were in front at the mile post, with Shere Khan, Speedy, and Tuatea next. Arctotis, Shere Khan, Frances, Tuatea, and Speedy were in that order two furlongs further on. Fine Night then moved up and at the half-mile post he headed Shere Khan to be second to Arctotis, while Tuatea, Tenor Royal, Frances, and Langham followed.

Fine Night led to the straight. Royal Tan was last at this stage, while just in front of him Speedy, Liebestraum, Excellency, and. Pandemonium were in line. Fine Night was out clear starting the last furlong, with several others moving up from the back. In a fine finish, Excellency got up to beat Fine Night by a head, while Royal Tan, a neck back, beat Liebestraum by a neck. Arctotis was close up, and Tuatea, Frances, and Shere Khan were the last three home. Better Display Full Play, who refused to leave the mark on the second day, was in more generous mood for the Waltham Handicap, in which he staged a fyrilliSnt finishing run. Revolte dropped back to last at the start and Flying Orders and Trafalgar Day made the early running, while Zorro and Magical were handy after two furlongs. Zorro dropped out when the straight was reached, Faithful Pal and Kirkella coming into the picture, while Ned Kelly and Full Play joined in starting the last furlong. Full Play then dashed away for an easy win. Revolte staged a fine run on the outside to beat Lady Christine, another fast finisher, with Kirkella, Lorna Leigh, and Faithful Pal all close up. The Peerswick Hurdles did not provide much excitement. John Gay arid Knight Crusader led out from Cloister, with the rest of the field soon strung out. John Gay had a slight advantage, but Knight' Crusader headed him at the five-furlong post. Cloister then moved up and caught Knight Crusader after jumping the last hurdle and, won going away. John Gay was a moderate third, Thomas, Martial Note, and Catterick Bridge following at intervals. Sir Willoughby fell at the first hurdle, followed at the second by Waiau King, whose rider, G. G. Hampton, broke a collarbone. All The Way Attractive Air was in front all the way in the Gimcrack Handicap. Exchange was with her at the start, while after a furlong Beau Soir, Oronoko, Newspaper, and Competitive were handy. Exchange retired when the straight was reached Competitive and Deti;act followed Attractive Air at the distance and the positions remained unchanged. AH' Alone, after meeting trouble early, did well to be fourth, with Peridot and Quartz next.

Braemorn got out on the move in the Yaldhurst Handicap, Chord, Oberon, and Encounter being prominent in the next bunch, with Scuttle, Boon Companion, and Watchword also going well, but further back Watchword moved up in the straight and headed Braemorn in the last stride. Oberon finished best of the others, with Scuttle, Lodestar, Pageant, and Count Minerva following. Fille d’Honneur and BosUn set the pace in the Richmond Handicap. Bosun was in trouble over a furlong from home, where Birdman and Dowry appeared. Birdman got up to beat Fille d’Honneur by a neck, while Dowry was only a nose away. Indiana and Caronia headed the others. Crease was leading after two furlongs in the Merivale Handicap, but Profane then took charge, with Bowling Green handy. Crease replaced Profane again at the two furlongs, where Salmon King, Robin Redbreast, and Infatuate were next. Robin Redbreast was in front starting the last furlong, where Bar Garrette, Dinnyhazer, and Zarcon were going well further back. Infiltrate then headed Robin Redbreast, but Flibbertigibbet finished fast to win in the last stride. Bar Garrette, Robin Redbreast, Dinnyhazer, and Zarcon followed. Robin Redbreast interfered with Bar Garrette at the end of a . furlong and with Infatuate in the straight, but the incidents were considered accidental.

Jockey Indisposed C. McDonald was indisposed after he won the Challenge Stages on Citril and was unable to ride again. It was reported later that he was an appendix case. He was taken to hospital, where he was operated, on afew hours later, and he is now making good progress. - . The inquiry was concluded into the accident on the second day, when Blue Print fell and broke a leg. After hearing her rider, R. W. Gould, who had been taken to hospital with slight

concussion, the stewards decided that the evidence did not disclose the cause of the accident.
