SPORTING Leyma’s Win At Nelson Gave Trainer A Reward

[SPECIAL TO START

NELSON, This Day.

The Nelson Cup was won; by the .Martarma -three-year-old colt, Leyma, in ah impressive manner. He was well back from, the leader, The Stormovik, arid Master Fox turning for home, but gradually worked, his way to the front and had. the race in ! hand 100 yards from the post. In a close tussle for the minor placings, The Stormovik held on to beat the short-priced favourite, Gay Stroller, : who did not have a favourable run in the middle stages,. Nga- . koti was finishing on into fourth i place and a head away in front of The Rip and Falconbridge. The lastnamed failed to unwind his usual finishing run after being handy throughout. Owner’s Attitude The winner is trained at Opaki by T. L. Jennings,' who will have reason to remember his success. Leyma’s owner, Mr A. E. Taplin, was not keen on making the trip, so he informed Jennings that if he felt like taking the horse he could do so at ,his own- expense, and if he won he could have the trophy attached to the race and £5O of the stake money. The trophy comprised a cut glass service of 100 pieces valued at £lOO. In addition, Jennings, as trainer, of the winner, received a trophy valued at £25. " With only four opponents, Wild Note was sent out a firm favourite for the open sprint, and when he drew away from the pacemaker, Determination, a. furlong from home, he appeared likely to canter home an easy winner, but Lady Myrtle came from well back to overhaul him near the line and beat him going away. Determination finished on to get within a head of the favourite and a neck in front of Veine d’Or. Wild Note’s display "led to much comment, the general opinion being that his defeat was due to overconfidence on the part of his rider, but no doubt he was tiring badly under his big impost, and could not have done better. The winner was ridden by i\. Lastwood, who returned to Riccarton on Thursday, after steering Luminous Knight, owned by his mother, Mrs C. G. Humphries, to victory at Tauherenikau on Tuesday, and he made a hurried trip to Nelson under a special engagement to ride The Rip in the cup. His mount on Lady Myrtle was only arranged shortly before the race. Poor Hurdling Display None of the hurdlers in Saturday s race could be credited with clean displays, and although Supreme Shop-, herd won. well he was probably xortunate in encountering a flattened panel of the last' fence, while .'he Mosgiel visitor, Relampago, who led him to that stage, made a fauay jump wider out and his rider lost hit iron. • The race was marred by a mishap to the five-year-old gelding. Becalm, who blundered over a hurdle in the back stretch and injured a shoulder. Becalm was purchased last season by B. Burgess for 1000 guineas and failed to race up to expectations. He was put to hurdling, and finished third in his first race early this month at Levin.
