2000 GUINEAS PAID • FOR ENGLISH MARE AT TRENTHAM SALE Ten English-bred thoroughbreds were submitted for auction on behalf of the Thoroughbred Export Company at Trentham on Friday, and their apnearance was one of the few interesting features of the day. The sale, at which Nev/ Zealand brood mares, yearlings, and horses in training, and untried stock came up for auction, created little interest and passings were frequent High reserves had been placed on tne imported stock, and there were six passings. The other four lots were secured at four-figure prices by Mr Ken Austin, of the Inglewood Stud, Kaiapoi. who in each case was acting as an agent. The highest price of the day Mr Austin offered for the five-year-old (English time) mare Midsummer Moon, a daughter of the Derby winner Midday Sun and Belle Adventure. She changed hands at 2000gns. Mr Austin, as, agent, offered 14C0gns for the chestnut mare, Marvgreen, which was bred in England in 1944. Marygreen, a winner in England is by Devonian, a son of Hyperion from Romantic Lass by Royal Dancer. The bay filly Miss Bluestocking fell to Mr Austin’s bid of lVOOgns. A first foal and a three-year-old in English time, she is by Chumleigh. a winner of the St Leger, from Eton Blue by the Derby winner Blue Peter. Mr Austin’s ether purchase as agent was for the filly Golden Magic, which was bred in Ireland in 1947. Golden Magic is by the successful French-bred sire Pappageno 11, from Golden Links, by Link Boy from Step Aside, by Blandford. ‘ Most of the New Zealand-bred lots failed to attract interest, The highest priced brood mare was Cute Melody, which, with a filly foal at foot by Massowa and in,foal to the same sire, brought 480gns. The buyer was Mr C. Chalmers, of Taradale, Hawke’s Bay. Only five of the 16 yearlings offered changed hands, and a chestnut colt by Lord Bobs from Olein was the top priced lot at 240gns. The buyer was Mr H. Eva, of Trentham, as an agent. Top price for horses in training was ICOgns, paid b v Mr A. Robson, of Poukawa, for Lady Vite. Mr Robson, the owner of Da Vinci, bred Lady Vite.
