MANDALAY CITY CAPTURED BY KAREN REBELS

The Karen Rebels have completely occupied Mandalay, according to press reports. The reports said that after’ three days’ fighting Government troops were pushed out of Mandalay and bitter fighting is continuing on the outskirts of the city. The Karens have also attacked Sagaing, across the Irrawaddy river from Mandalay. The Associated Press correspondent quotes a report that the Deputy Commissioner of Sassein, Mr F. J. Hawkins, an Anglo-Indian, has been detained on suspicion of collaborating: with the Karen rebels.
