Five New Records Set At High School’s Sports

Five new records were established and two others were equalled when the Greymouth Technical High School opened its annual athletic sports meeting at the Recreation ground this morning. Conditions for the meeting are ideal. Four of the new records were established by girls. The first lowered was in the senior girls’ hop, step and jump event, in which D'. Robertson’s record performance of 32ft Ilin, set in 1947, was beaten by L. Newcombe who recorded 32ft s|in. L. Newcombe also succeeded in lowering the senior girls’ long jump record, set in 1947 by D. Perrin at 15ft 4jin. The new record is 15ft 9in. In the intermediate girls’ events, M. Gordon established two new records, the first in the 120 yards championship, in which she recorded 15sec, beating the previous best time of 15 l-ssec, set in 1947 by A. Biddington. M. Gordon also established a new distance for the long jump, her performance of 14ft 6in being nine inches better than the previous best. R. Rose set a new record in the intermediate boys’ javelin throw when he recorded 109 ft 6in. Two records were equalled in the senior and intermediate boys’ 220 yards championship sprints.
