REEFTON Considerable Rise In Numbers Of Mining Students
(0.C.) REEFTON, This Day. The February report of the director (Mr W. J. Bolitho) presented at the monthly meeting of the council of the Reefton School of Mines showed that there had been a considerable increase in the enrolment at all four teaching centres, there being 37 students in all with the Reefton enrolment 25. The increase was heaviest in the senior division for coal mining examinations. The report stated that the total of 37 students was the largest first-term class for many years. The. laboratory tested 12 samples for the month, .seven being quartz assays and five coal dust samples. The council expressed satisfaction at the increased numbers attending the school. MINISTERIAL VISIT The Minister of Health (Miss M. B. Howard) spent part of the weekend in Reefton. She inspected the nurses’ home building and the Reefton Hospital, and expressed satisfaction with the good progress. of the work .on the home. Miss Howard and her party left on Monday morning for Canterbury. LODGE VISITORS Thirty members of Lodge Robert Burns, Christchurch, accompanied.by their wives, visited Reefton during the week-end. The party arrived on Saturday afternoon, and attended a lodge meeting at Reefton. The ' women of the party were entertained by the wives of Reefton Lodge members. Following an inspection of some Reefton coal mines on Sun-
day morning, the party left for Christchurch on Sunday afternoon. PENALTY ON RATES To date the county treasurer at Reefton reports the collection of approximately 60 per cent of the Inangahua County Council’s annual rates. Payments have been received steadily over the last few days. Tomorrow is the final day for payment before the imposition of the 10 per cent penalty. • PERSONAL Mr Wilfred Breet. (Ohura) is visiting relatives at Reefton. Mr and Mrs R. G. Lawn (Hokitika) are visiting Reef ton.
