NEW CONSTITUTION FOR ARGENTINE

. BUENOS AIRES, March 12. The Argentine Constituent Assembly today approved a new Constitution which allows the President (General Peron) to seek re-election if he desires,.

The Constitution gives the President broad emergency powers, including the right to declare a “state of alarm” in any part of the country. It also gives the Government greater economic controls over the nation, making provision for a controlled economy which envisages the breaking-up of landed estates. The Constitution forbids Argentine recognition of national or international organisations which are opposed to individual liberties or threaten the democratic system. The Associated Press says that this prohibition is apparently aimed at the Communist Party. Many observers expect the Government to take stronger measures against the Communists.

The new Constitution increases the Cabinet from eight members to 20. It replaces the Charter adopted in 1853, and is effective immediately.
